The first woman to win an Olympic medal was Kyniska of Sparta, a Spartan princess who won the four-horse chariot race in 396 BC. Since women were not allowed to compete as riders, Kyniska trained her horses and hired male drivers, making her the owner and victor of the event. Her victory was repeated in 392 BC, and she had a bronze statue erected at Olympia proclaiming her as the first woman to win an Olympic crown. Her success inspired other women. and by the end of the ancient Olympics, numerous other women had also won victories as chariot owners.
